According to Jon Hoch, founder of Electric Generators Direct, customers now have two choices in ordering a generator: (1) Factory Direct or (2) Same-Day Shipment. The factory-direct concept eliminated the need for warehouses and retail stores. As a result, the company passed the saving onto the customer as direct discounts. Factory direct is ideal for customers who have the luxury of waiting for their generators, said Hoch. Unfortunately, it has two drawbacks product availability and speed. Electric Generators Direct modified its business model to accommodate the new service. The company is now stocking a limited supply of its best selling generators in its new 3,000-square foot warehouse. "The service charge covers our expense to warehouse, fullfill and ship these orders." Not Next Day Service All Same-Day Shipment orders will be shipped immediately from Electric Generators Directs limited inventory via semi trucks. Generators cannot be shipped in an airplane because they contain small traces of gasoline. According to Hoch, Same-Day Shipment significantly speeds up delivery times. Under the Factory Direct model, customers can typically expect delivery within 10-14 business days (if the model is in-stock). With Same-Day Shipment service, customers can receive their generator as quickly as 2-3 business days.
By shaving a few days off the delivery time, 'Same-Day Shipment' orders can often arrive before the next Category 5 Hurricane makes landfall, said Hoch. Electric Generators Direct will provide customers with a tracking number so they can track the status of their order in real time. Roads may be closed or inaccessible during a disaster. Therefore, the company cannot guarantee an exact delivery date for each order. Electric Generators Direct will continue to offer the Factory Direct service.
